THE DAILY ISLAMIC REMINDERS. Yaumul Ahad. 8th day of Jumaadal Aakhir 1444AH (Sunday 1st January. 2023). CAN WE CELEBRATE NEW YEAR AS MUSLIMS. BismilLah.
Scholars have ruled based on QUR'AN and Sunnah that we Muslims cannot be part of any non Islamic celebrations such as the so called New Year Celebrations as we have our official Celebrations which are the Eid Celebrations.
We are warned by the Messenger of ALLAH sallallahu alaihi wasallam against emulating the kuffar and doing that can create lots of fitnah or risk to our eemaan. Their Celebrations involves zina at the night, drinking alcohol, free mixing of non relatives etc which are forbidden for us.
But if your non Muslim friend, relative, colleagues, etc says to you happy new year and pray for you, there is nothing wrong to say thank you and wish them well in their new year because we are allowed to make dua for them and we are allowed to be kind and do anything which may soften their hearts towards Islam. Let's not be extreme in saying what can harden their hearts towards Islam. To wish them well in their new year does not constitute Celebrations. New year has nothing to do with exchanging gifts but if they offer you any halaal item as gift you can accept it. ALLAH knows best.
May ALLAH keeps guiding us all and protect us from any satanic influences. Aameen.
