RULINGS on ADOPTING NICKNAMES IN ISLAM. BismilLahir Rahmaanir Raheem.
Alhamdulillah. Islam is a complete code of life which deals with all sorts of issues. Bassically , there is no harm in adopting any good meaningful nickname as long as they do not imply anything impermissible, such as contempt, hate, pride, arrogance and so forth.
It is narrated in Imam Bukhari's al Adab al Mufrad that the Prophet (ALLAH bless him and grant him peace) would refer to Sayyidah `Aa'ishah may ALLAH be pleased with her as "Aa-ish" and Sayyidina `Uthman may ALLAH be pleased with as "`Uth". So we can call our love ones with nicknames such as Princess, Darling, Imam, etc. The title "Abu Hurairah" may ALLAH be pleased with him is a Nick name the PROPHET sallallahu alaihi wasallam gave to Abdur-Raḥmān ibn Sakhr (عبد الرحمن بن صخر) which means "Father of a Kitten", in reference to his documented attachment to cats.
Let's just avoid using bad nicknames like negga, shagy etc. Such bad names only aid us to be arrogant and pride.
We ask ALLAH to have mercy on us and protect us from any pride and arrogance. Aameen.
